Surfing in the Gower
10th September 2007..
Weekends at the Gower in South Wales are among my favourites, with wide expanses of sandy beach, rolling surf and a backdrop of beautiful hills and valleys. I love to surf, but the choice of activities depends on the adventurer. Windsurfing, Kayaking, Paragliding, Horseriding, Archery, Sailing and Walking are just a few of the options.
It takes about 4 hours to drive from Surrey along the M4, the journey is aided by the Beach Boys Greatest Hits cd and a variety of talking books (in my case anyway!!). Its easy to surf and it doesn’t matter if the weather is good or bad, as long as the surf is reasonable. With the sun shining and 8ft rolling waves I don’t think there’s anything better. Llangenith is my favourite beach (shown above), but Three Cliffs Bay comes a close second. At Llangenith there’s a campsite, restaurant and other amenities and once parked its only a short walk with your board to the beach. At Three Cliffs, the views are fantastic but the walk is pretty long with a board which means it tends to be quieter. There is no segregation between body boarders, surfers or kyakers although kite surfers are meant to keep to the right.
If you want some lessons Surf GSD can help you with a 2 hour short course with wetsuits and boards included.
I would recommend a weekend in the Gower to anybody who loves the outdoors if you haven’t been, make the time to go and have some fun!
