After a high intensity training regime of jogging round Regents Park twice, the three of us (Dina, Vicky and Susie or Ting Tong, Teeny and Bear as we’re known on the training circuit) completed our 5K ‘Race for Life’ on Sunday in the record time of 43 minutes.
The day was a scorcher, so equipped with our underscore ‘un’ t-shirts (thanks Kris) and plenty of water we made our way to the starting line where Sarah Greene (formerly of Blue Peter and Going Live fame for those of you who are ancient enough to remember) gave us a speech on how we were “phenomenally phenomenal women” which was followed by a hilarious warm up. Imagine 5,000 women (big and small) squashed into the smallest space imaginable trying to do aerobics. Not only was it a bit difficult but the largest woman in the world trod on Susie’s foot (and we’re not exaggerating when we say ‘the largest’). Dina just decided to freestyle (nice moves ‘D’) but Vicks managed to keep up with the instructors. Once wed finished the warm up we moved towards the start line feeling confident and ready to face the challenge.
Our first hurdle faced us… Do we join the “walkers” or the “runners”. This thought obviously only lasted for a split second and as we approached the start line with the horn sounding, off we trotted (literally) as 5,000 women began elbowing each other in a feeble attempt to actually run.
Off we went finally breaking into a steady run, the three of us even overtaking people as we powered through the City of London at 10am with the “Rocky” theme playing in our heads. We only stopped briefly to catch our breath and comment on some of the various dubious items of “sportswear” our fellow racers were wearing – black hotpants with fluorescent pink socks and white thunder thighs isn’t a look we’ll be trying out at the gym (meow)!
As we approached the 4K mark, the adrenaline really kicked in and we decided to really go for it “Eye of the Tiger” getting louder and louder!
With only a couple of hundred more metres left, Ting Tong, Teeny & Bear powered to the finish line in a record time (for them) of 43 minutes, so “record” in fact that our only two supporters (Kris & Hayden) missed us crossing the finish line as they thought we’d take much longer !
We were duly rewarded with a beautiful afternoon basking in the sunshine sitting outside a pub, well deservedly stuffing our faces and sipping on very civilised jugs of Pimms.
So… Next year we aim to smash our own personal best as well as topping the 700 we raised for Cancer Research.
A big thank you to everyone who sponsored us and an even bigger thank you to our only TWO supporters who came on the day: Kris who was there from start to finish and Hayden who managed to make it just as we crossed the finish line. We realize that 10am on a Sunday was slightly ambitious to hope for more support… But there’s always next year…

Well done girls!
How’s the foot Susie and did you overtake the largest woman in the world? or do you think she was trying to knobble you in order to get an advantage?
I think the amount you raised was really impressive and wonder what your next challenge could be. Whatever it is good luck.
Well done!

Really impressive ladies. Out of bed before 12 on a sunday. Respect! Would have been interesting to note your time if the shops (or pubs) had been open though…

Yay! I’m so proud of you girls, sounds like a fantastic day for a good-deed run. You know I was there in spirit! Hopefully when you top your performance next year, I can be there to cheer you along the course, signs and sound-makers galore. Maybe Kris and I should put together a ’serious’ training program for you…
