Since Digg creator Kevin Rose tweeted ‘Ok, umm, huge rumor: Google to launch facebook competitor very soon “Google Me” very credible source’ at the end of June the web has been awash with rumours about Google releasing it’s own social media site in direct competition with Facebook & Twitter.

It seems that Google Me, as it has been tentatively named, is a very real project with Adam D’Angelo, Facebooks ex CTO stating on a Q&A “Here is what I’ve pieced together from some reliable sources: This is not a rumour. This is a real project. There are a large number of people working on it. I am completely confident about this”

Google has attempted to open a few doors into the social media world recently, but with Buzz not really providing anything to get people excited (i was very tempted to use a pun about buzzing) about and Google Wave seemingly lost in the wilderness (does anybody actually know what it does) this may be Google’s final chance to stop the dominance of Facebook from taking over the entire web, (it has already become the most visited site in the US)!

After Apple vs Microsoft, Apple vs Adobe & Sony vs Microsoft it seems about time Google got itself a proper rival to go to war with. Watch this space as the story unfolds!
