ANOTHER NICER TUESDAY
We attended another inspirational ‘Nicer Tuesdays’ event recently, and as usual it left us energised and full of creative energy.

Opening with an introduction to her Argentinian design magazine was Kirsten Algera. Each issue of MacGuffin focuses on a solitary object, and is a platform for research, inspirational content and bizarre facts. Bex Day then talked us through her recent exhibition, Hen, which she describes as ‘an anthropological study on the fluidity of gender’. Following this was a talk by Accept & Proceed, who were tasked with designing an installation for NASA to convey data sent back from two satellites orbiting the Earth. The evening was closed by director Johnny Kelly. He recently directed four animations with Cheerios encouraging kids to be kinder to each other.

We’re looking forward to the next instalment from It’s Nice That!
New RTLAdConnect Website is here
We worked closely with the international media brand RTL AdConnect to develop a digital presence that extends their international reach and supports their global salesforce.

Our research found that some areas of their previous site weren't performing and that information was needed to be shown in a much more concise and user-friendly format. We used that information to create an ever changing new website that could be easily updated to reach more people.
Here we grow!
Underscore is growing! Please give a warm welcome to Savannah, Gini and Tessa. We’re looking forward to work on some amazing projects together.
Rewarding Hoarding
We want to show off these hoarding boards that we designed for a new transformational landmark development in the heart of Reading.

We are really happy how they turned out: sleek and elegant, but also playful, hinting at what the space will eventually become. Watch this space!
Inspiring Stuff
Last Friday, we ventured the newly redeveloped Coal Drops Yard of Kings Cross to get some placemaking inspiration. There's so much to discover there, from shops, bars, restaurants and leisure areas.
Mixing old and new architecture, clean open spaces, and interactive fountains, there is so much to explore, and it certainly gave us a new perspective on placemaking in central London. Past projects have seen us develop Alexandra Palace, Brighton Pier and Margate, as well as the West One Shopping Centre in London's West End plus many more - take a look at our case studies.

We’ve been having some fun playing around with animation whilst evolving ideas for a recent client project. Stay tuned.
Flying high for the weekend
Today we see the release of a live-action adaptation of Dumbo. What has changed from the original version to this new release? Everything, or almost. Not only have rumours spread about an updated story line, but Tim Burton will have spread his signature magic in every corner of this classic, creating a perfect mix of animation combined with live filming and special effects, which gives life to one of those dreamy, design-expressive realities that we still all remember from Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, don’t we? Besides looking forward to being glued to the screen and savouring every action packed minute we’d like to embrace the core message that Dumbo’s story has been conveying for almost 80 years: believe in yourself.
What’s for lunch?
We were super psyched to have Stuart from Handsome Frank come and chat to us about the amazing illustrators they have on their books. We saw some of their fantastic artists promo videos and all crowded around our kitchen bench to flip through the portfolios, devouring the artwork inside.

It was inspiring to learn the individual process of each illustrator, and how Handsome Frank mediates between the artist and client, creating some mesmerising work for some of the biggest brands on the planet!

A totally motivating way to spend a Friday lunchtime!
We’ve been glugging!
Yesterday we attended another great Glug event at the iconic Shoreditch Town Hall. The topic was ‘Where Art and Technology Collide’, and a stellar line-up of speakers showcased work that combines these two worlds in extraordinary ways.

The talks on autonomous driving, past tech, gamification, and collaborative exhibitions and projects were super impressive and inspiring! Each time we go to these events we all learn so much and come away super energised.

The speakers were Made Thought, Google Creative Lab, Kin Design, The Science Museum, Rachael Clancy, Art&Graft and The Beautiful Meme. A massive thanks to all of you for another motivating event!

Wishing all the females bossing it today a very happy International Women’s Day, from our team to yours.

Let’s take this opportunity to talk about career independence and the importance of mental health and transparency in the creative industry. This week, we visited the first monthly BRICKS TALKS, kicking off with a power diverse, fluid and queer panel, all sharing stories and advice from their unique career paths, explaining how they manage to stay true to their own morals and values while bringing home the benjamins.

If you want to be as inspired as we were, check out the next talk on the 16th of April.

These pancakes are flipping delicious!
Walking into the studio today and smelling freshly cooked pancakes... Can life get any better? Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day to most, is a perfect excuse to scoff some treats. Now we just need to get the Nutella song out of our heads! However you have your pancakes, make them as unique as U!
It’s time you met Sam :]
The Business Travel Show is the biggest event in Europe for travel buyers and managers to evaluate thousands of products and services from over 260 global travel brands. We were quite proud to see a few of our brands on show within Flight Centre Travel Group who took pride of place at the front of the show - including FCM Connect & YourCT. It was also amazing to be apart of the launch of Your CT Assistant, which brings the technology of Sam :] to Corporate Traveller. Look out for the taxis in and around London for the next few weeks!
A font of knowledge
Big shout out to Eleni and Beatrix from Dalton Maag for coming and chatting to us about all things typography. We were fascinated to learn how they are seeing the work they produce not purely as typography, but also as pieces of software that have to work across a multitude of devices and applications. Just our type of thing!
Love is in the air
Sending lots of love from the Underscore studio to you this special Valentine’s Day. We’re pretty besotted with you already, but today especially it’s all about you!
New site drop
Over the past few months we have been collaborating with Frasers Property, a global real estate developer that owns and manages a diverse portfolio of business parks and residences in the UK. After a brand evolution and articulation exercise, we are pleased to announce the launch of a new website and brand film for Watchmoor Park. Check it out at www.watchmoorpark.com
OUR FIRST DIRTY WORD
Last night we attended the first of a series of events dedicated to dirty words, hosted by Protein Studios in Shoreditch. Not the kind of dirty words that you’re thinking of (cheeky), but rather the common design terms that are bandied endlessly, so much that they’ve become meaningless. And that makes them proper dirty words.

The first word up for discussion was exclusivity. Yesterday’s talk revolved around the question of how to mark out a product or brand as special in a world totally saturated by claims of exclusive products/brands/services. Following an intro to the topic, Sara Arnold - founder of Higher Studio, Thidarat Kaha - founder of Basement Six, and ebay_pieces, discussed their approach to building brands that are truly exclusive. Their conclusion - in order to create an experience that actually feels special, brands must make sure they tell a unique story. We couldn't agree more!
OUR NICER TUESDAY
This week we definitely had a “Nicer Tuesday”: one of our favourite events of the month hosted by It’s Nice That, which brings together a selection of inspiring and entertaining speakers. This month’s event was all about sharing insights on working processes.

Illustrator Joey Yu showed us her colourful drawings of recent travels, puppeteers Jonny and Will played an IKEA ad that lets furniture move like humans, design studio B.A.M. talked about the rebrand of White Cube gallery, and last but not least, Wieden+Kennedy’s Department of New Realities showcased projects across technology and 3D design.

We loved every bit of it!
Our new HQ
So after a thousand unforgettable memories in Little Portland Street, we're delighted to say we have a new front door and swanky new address at 100 Oxford Street - a truly amazing space where we can now think, collaborate and create.

They say that home is not a place, it’s a feeling, and that home is the starting place of love, hope and dreams - so watch out for big things from Underscore's new HQ in the months ahead.
PAINTING BY NUMBERS
So many white walls in the new office... so many ideas!!

Here's a clue to where we ended up... well it's not really a move without throwing a few paint splashes around is it?!
Heraldry - the original brand definition
We've been having some fun rethinking shield designs whilst evolving our ideas for a recent client project.

There can't be many eras in history where the language of design meant more to people.
connecting the dots
Here we've been playing with such diverse themes as cultural, spiritual and aspirational symbolism in order to create an environmental pattern that can transfer to the physical space.
stay salty
Experimenting with colours and patterns to form a design language that floats your boat.

Individually we are one drop, together we are an ocean.
It’s not you, it’s M.E
Bold typographic campaign including messaging to get the point of M.E sufferers across. Utilising a stroke to cover some of the wording, representing the way M.E sufferers feel: i.e that they’re being ignored.
Space. Reimagined.
A bold route that explores perspectives, just as we challenge the development perspectives of our clients and enhance the viewing and listening perspective of the audiences that will enjoy the spaces that we design
ALL SHAPES AND SIZES
Working with deconstructed shapes to reform the whole gives a metaphor of a brand with a thousand moving parts.
The hill
Taking inspiration from the idea of elevation and applying it to a distinctive narrative
TWENTY SOMETHING
A textured approach to promote a potential gallery in Mayfair, giving an instant connection between the space and the intended audience.
The Millicent
A female driven workplace fit for the modern woman
For the finer things
Bringing new life to a historic area through bold colours and shapes to appeal to a younger audience and promote the new quayside development
