Hello there, my name is Chris O, designer at underscore.
Recently I was intrigued by a report published by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield Byers, a successful venture capital firm based in the Silicon Valley.
Their latest report mapped the growth of mobile and tablet versus the decline of desktop internet usage over the past year.
The report also showed an expected yet incredible shift of users from traditional mobile phones to smartphones. The world has seen a 20% growth in smartphone users across the world, with the fastest growth in countries including China, India, Brazil and Indonesia. However, these developing markets have proven more difficult to monetise.
With an 81% growth of internet traffic on mobiles and tablets, KPCB also measured a 52% jump in online purchases in the last year alone within first world countries.
As reported by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield Byers, “In terms of devices and users, the mobile internet is expected to be 10 times the size of the ‘desktop internet’.”
This trend has had emerging digital implications; as businesses identify the potential to extend their business offering to international markets, underscore has seen an increase in demand for responsive and multilingual websites.
Finally, the conclusion of the report provides a valuable message for businesses; it’s more important than ever to ensure your website is responsive for the best user experience despite the platform used.
